Tao features two different sessions, the last four tracks were recorded live in concert in Udine, Italy, in 1976 while the first six tracks were recorded in 1984 in a studio in Bologna, Italy. Soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy and percussionist Andrea Centazzo perform improvised music called Tao 1-10, featuring Lacy's spiky, angular melodies and improvisations with Centazzo supplying empathetic support.
